That Sinking Feeling

Life is not always smooth sailing. Sure there are days when the skies are sunny and cloudless and the seas are smooth as glass. But there are also days when the clouds are dark and gloomy and the waves are crashing onto your boat. Maybe after some routine blood work the doctor calls and says, “We need to talk.” Or maybe you suddenly and unexpectedly find yourself without a job. Or it could be that at the end of the month you have more bills to pay than you have money in your checkbook. Or how about this, you step out of the boat in faith and soon you find yourself beginning to sink. You thought that you were following God’s plan only to find yourself questioning whether you really did hear from God, or if you simply ate bad pizza. Where do you turn when the bottom drops out?

What is at the bottom of that black hole you find yourself falling in? Will it hurt? Fear has taken over and you are waiting for the crash landing. Rest assured that Jesus is there to catch you.

You might be familiar with the story of Peter walking on water. In Matthew 14:22-36 we see that the disciples were in a boat and it got caught in a storm. When it was still dark the disciples saw Jesus walking on the water and they were scared, they thought it was a ghost. Peter said, “Lord if it’s you, tell me to come to you on the water (v. 28).” Jesus invited Peter to get out of the boat, and we pick up the story here beginning in verse 29 – Then Peter got out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”

Let’s continue this story, it is about to get really really good. In verse 31 we read these comforting words – Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”

CoolClips_busi2682If you hear nothing else today, please hear this. When you are sinking, know that Jesus is right there with His hand extended, saying to you, “I am right here!” So when the bottom falls out run to Jesus and rest assured that he is waiting right there for you!

We will end with this, from Psalm 27:5 – For in the day of trouble he will keep me safe in his dwelling; he will hide me in the shelter of his sacred tent and set me high upon a rock.
