None of us have to look too far these days to find promises or commitments not kept. It is said that in the past a handshake sealed the deal. Today, someone’s word, a handshake, or even written contracts are often not good enough anymore. Promises and commitments that are broken on a regular basis. What is committed to today is forgotten by tomorrow. We live in a “Read my lips: no new taxes” society.
In a society filled with people and organizations that are sometimes not too trustworthy, we have a God in whom we can put all our trust and hope in. In Deuteronomy, the fifth book in the Old Testament, we read these words about God in 7:9 – Understand, therefore, that the LORD your God is indeed God. He is the faithful God who keeps his covenant for a thousand generations and lavished his unfailing love on those who love him and keep his commands. (NLT)
And in Hebrews 10:23, right after the verses that tell us that through Jesus we now have access to God, we read this – Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promises is faithful.
Faith is the confidence in the trustworthiness of God. And today, and every day, you can know that God is faithful and He says to you “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5) Now that is a promise that lasts a lifetime!
