Disturb Us, Lord

sail-away-into-the-amber-sky-tamara-gibbsToday we want to share a prayer attributed to Sir Francis Drake. He is said to have prayed this as he was getting ready to depart off the west coast of South America during his voyage around the world in 1577.

We ask you – Are you willing to lose sight of the land in order to find the stars? Take a few minutes and reflect upon that question and ask God to disturb you in the areas you need to be disturbed in. Ask God to show you what is holding you back, then ask Him to help you throw off the bowlines.

DISTURB US, LORD, Sir Francis Drake

Disturb us, Lord, when We are too pleased with ourselves, When our dreams have come true Because we dreamed too little, When we arrived safely Because we sailed too close to the shore.

Disturb us, Lord, when With the abundance of things we possess We have lost our thirst For the waters of life; Having fallen in love with life, We have ceased to dream of eternity And in our efforts to build a new earth, We have allowed our vision Of the new Heaven to dim.

Disturb us, Lord, to dare more boldly, To venture on wilder seas Where storms will show Your mastery; Where losing sight of land, We shall find the stars.

We ask you to push back The horizons of our hopes; And to push back the future In strength, courage, hope, and love.

This we ask in the name of our Captain, Who is Jesus Christ.

We will end with this quote from Mark Twain, “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”
